Tomorrow it begins. Tomorrow I begin my student teaching. I am working in a Jr. High Band classroom. Within a month (probably sooner), I will be in complete control of the entire band program. Teaching all classes, all levels. Doing all the lesson planning, all the classroom management. Teaching Jazz. I really need to buy that techniques book. Jazz is scary.
Teaching is scary.
Pray for me.
And while you're at it, could you pray for my students too? I'm not sure but what I might screw them up for life.
OK, I waited to respond until I knew how that first day went, and I'm thrilled to have found out that it went just fine. As will the days to follow!! All you have to do is just keep them buffalo-ed. You can't be taller than them, but you can look meaner, and maybe, just maybe, if you try reeeeeally reeeaaally hard, even though it'll take some serious effort on your part you'll actually wind up attaining your goal and screw them up for life, but good!! You GO GIRL!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat she says! You rock! And/or roll. Or rhumba. Jive? What exactly is it that you do again?
ReplyDeleteFrom my bit of experience with middle-school aged children, may I just offer this teeny-tiny bit of advice??
ReplyDeleteI may? Oh, so gracious of you! Because I was gonna anyway! (big surprise, eh?)
That age of people (not quite "children" but certainly not "adult") are some of the most interesting, perplexing, surprising, humorous, open, honest, frightened, and incredibly BRAVE people that you can ever hope to meet!
They will make you laugh--probably several times a day--if you let them. My advice? Let them.
Seriously, when I started out working at the delinquent center, some older/wiser types tried to tell me that I needed to start out tough, put up a front, or the kids would eat me up. I'm no good at fronting, and I'm glad, because I got to know those young people, and I'm better for it!
Let them make you laugh. Let them see you laugh. Let them laugh with you--AT you if neccesary! ;-) Laughing is always good. Good for the soul and for the immune system.
And that leads me to my second bit of advice. If you aren't already, start taking a REALLY GOOD multivitamin and vitamin C. Throw in some others if you like, but at least those 2. And try to get some rest now and then. And remember I love you! :)
